Scenario

Blupi leads a quiet life on his planet until a strange meteorite crashes in a desert area. Only much later does Blupi realise that his crops are being destroyed by huge spiders. Though he's always been a tough and healthy type, a weird virus has been causing him to sneeze and cough a lot lately.
What's going on In fact, the meteorite is a spaceship. The only passsenger on board is a mean-looking robot. Its· goal is to build factories that produce a variety of aliens. Help Blupi use the resources of his beautiful planet to chase these invaders away !

The game

There are some 30 missions to figure out, ranging from really easy to completely mind-boggling. The goals of the missions are varied to grow food, to find a strategic point, to eradicate aliens, etc... You may need just one Blupi to accomplish the missions, or dozens !

A cool interface

Planet Blupi·s interface is designed to remain as discreet as possible, so you can have fun and concentrate on the game. There·s no need for long strokes across the screen with the mouse. You don·t waste time choosing buttons and artifacts from a large display somewhere out of reach. A small zone on the left gives general information about the mission in progress. When you want Blupi to do a specific action, just click on the right spot in the scenery. A palette of actions available pops up, and you can make your choice. Actions are smooth and quick. A limited series of optional exercises can be used to learn how to play the game. A large selection of decors. Blupi·s planet has 4 distinct areas

· Open prairie
· Deep woods
· Desert
· Snowy landscape

Each mission is carried out in a vast area of 40'000 cells (200x200 square elements)

"An unknown RTS game that really deserves to be played."

Many of you probably never heard of Epsitec's main series of games: Blupi. This saga features a bunch of different kinds of games, from platforms to RTS. Planet Blupi is a cute RTS that combines the usual elements of the genre while providing a fun challenge that never gets old and focuses mainly on your Blupis' health rather than killing enemies and destroying buildings. The storyline is quite simple: the Blupis are peacefully living on their beloved planet, when suddenly a meteorite crashes down. Later on, Blupis notice that their lands are being inhabited by spiders and other mechanical beings. There's also a new virus that makes them sick. In fact, the meteorite is actually a spaceship driven by a boss robot who just wants to conquer Blupis' planet.

Planet Blupi has an isometric view with totally 2D elements but some cute cutscenes in FMV. As you proceed through missions, your goal will always be different: you'll be asked to grow food (tomatoes), build ... buildings, guide your Blupis through some kind of dangerous path or simply destroying aliens... or rather all these things all packed together. The controls are quite simple and intuitive, every Blupi has an energy bar which he consumes by doing anything, that means that he also consumes it when walking. In order to refill it, he must eat food. So the first thing you might want to do could be growing tomatoes, but you must first build a cabin... by gathering wood and such. Also there are iron mines, labs, where you can create various things, from protective armours to time bombs.

The musics are very good and really fit the levels, although they may get repetitive after a bit (and you may get frustrated by the whole environment as you may not always succeed the first time you play a mission). The difficulty depends on the mission: you should find yourself at ease with most ones: the keys are good timing and good reflexes, and good base knowledge of your enemies' actions. For example, you must know where to place a time bomb as some smart enemies will simply crash it. Also, some enemies kill the Blupis at once, while others simply poison them... funny to notice how the main boss doesn't do anything (though he's the one creating monsters).

Overall, this is really a good game, not anything like Warcraft and Starcraft but should get the deserved success. Older players may not like it for its toony appearence, but trust me, you'll find a... challenging challenge. Nowadays it's quite hard to find it, so I suggest trying on Blupi official site (just type Blupi in some search engine) or on sites like eBay. Have fun!
