Gulf War - Operation Desert Hammer
 

In this action game the player controls a M12 tank, called The Hammer, to bring piece to Iraq where The Beast rules as a dictator. Every of the 18 missions is accompanied with a cutscene where his newest atrocities are shown.

The M12 has a heavy gun and a rocket launcher which each have two ammo types against regular and armored enemies. The chain gun has unlimited ammo but small power. In some missions there is also a possibility to request artillery and air attacks. The game is action oriented and so the handling is a simple combination between mouse and keyboard controls mouse look is used to aim the turrets and with the keyboard the tank is moved.

The missions are linear and mostly the goal is to drive from point A to point B. Of course there are a lot of enemy forces which try to prevent this, e.g. tanks, bunkers or rocket launchers, and other obstacles like mine fields. In later missions there are also hostile helicopters. Some buildings contain ammo or repair stations, a mini map shows the surroundings and goals.

Gameplay:

I love these tank sims, my aim is to collect them all if i can. The in game videos are a bit cheesey but the game has enough action to keep you going through the missions. The graphics were very nice for 1999 and has support for all 3D cards including 3dfx.

Full multiplayer options for 2-8 players. (lan, modem, serial & inet with compatability for mplayer & heat.net)

Unlike Armored Fist you can't climb steep hills and at full speed the tanks engine sounds like a coin rolling across a table but being a hi-tech top-secret prototype tank i guess the engine must sound the part so its another good reason to set the CD to D-Drive for the in game music. Other than that its a good tank sim. ;-)

Controls:

By default Gulf War is setup in the same way as "Recoil" where the mouse controls the direction, arrow keys for excelleration and reverse and primary and secondary weapons are on the left-right mouse keys. Full key arrangements are shown in the manual or setup menu.
