Mirror on MEGA
Despite their pariah status amongst developers in the United States, music games are extremely popular in Japan. Consumers apparently can't get enough of these games, and on the forefront of that noisy wave is Dance Dance Revolution, which has seen many mixes, versions, and different games spread across the arcade and consoles of Nippon. The PlayStation has already been graced with two different remixes, and now comes the third, and while this version bares some resemblances to the first two, there are some definite changes in 3rdMix that players might want to take note of: both improvements, and some subjective disappointments. The original and the 2ndRemix both had extremely similar set-ups, basically running off of the exact same engine. While it's hard to say if 3rdMix has totally different programming under the hood, it has definitely been spruced up from the two former incarnations. While the characters that dance around on screen have almost nothing to do with the game itself, in this version you have the ability to actually choose which characters you want to use, which is a nice touch. You can pick from robots, strange spiral creatures, hip modern dancers, or seventies disco dolls. There are also some new modes, previously unseen in prior versions. One of the funniest is Diet Diet Revolution, where you pick how many calories you want to kill and then dance away. The game will go until you've reached your supposed calorie count, effectively giving those who thought they could use this game for exercise a more useful tool. Also, instead of a hard mode, Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMix has a devilish little experience known as Non-Stop mode, which is exactly how it sounds: you pick from a group of three pre-selected songs and they play, one after the other, with little to no time in between to pause. As you might imagine, this mode isn't for the faint of heart, or the faint of lung, as I've learned from first hand experience. While the extra stuff is all well and good, the focus of any Dance Dance Revolution mix must be the music, and if there's one area that this version is weaker than its previous incarnations, it is the songs. While there are still plenty of catchy tunes to enjoy, one problem with 3rdMix is the lack of variety as opposed to the other mixes. While they featured a wide variety of music, 3rdMix seems overpopulated with fast techno tracks. Although there are a few songs that break the mold, most of them are hard and fast, and the difficulty in this version seems to have been upped proportionately as well. It makes sense that as people get more familiar with the game, they want different kinds of music, and more challenging songs, but still, the music of 2ndReMix is more quirky and catchy. Based on its own merits, however, the soundtrack of 3rdMix is decent enough and should get most people groovin'. In all, Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMix is definitely a worthy addition to your dance game library. If you are new to the series, however, you might want to begin with the two previous mixes. Either way, make sure you get the pads if you're interested in Dance Dance Revolution, as playing without them is a little like fishing without a boat. |
