Andrea Datzman

Andrea Datzman is an American musician and composer who worked as Michael Giacchino's scoring coordinator on 2009's Star Trek. She has been working with Giacchino since 2005, when she did score preparation and additional orchestrations for him on the hit television series Alias (created by Star Trek director and producer J.J. Abrams) and Lost (co-created by Abrams and fellow Star Trek producer Damon Lindelof). In addition to her work with Giacchino, she scored the Star Trek: Short Treks second season episode "Ask Not".

Early life and career

Datzman grew up in the suburbs of San Francisco, California, and took to studying music at a young age. By the age of 17, she was well-established as a pianist and singer, performing weekly as a vocalist at San Francisco area Jazz venues. In 2003, she earned her Bachelors of Music Composition degree from the University of California in Santa Barbara.

After graduating, Datzman relocated to Los Angeles in 2004 where she took part in the University of Southern California's Scoring for Motion Pictures & Television graduate program. At the same time, she scored many independent short films, including Hailey's Comet (2005) and Oblivion, Nebraska (2006). Upon completing the program in 2005, Datzman began to work on major studio films as well as network television shows.

Film and television work

Datzman provided additional orchestrations for the acclaimed 2005 film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang for composer John Ottman, who received a Saturn Award nomination from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for this score. The film itself featured Star Trek: The Next Generation guest star Corbin Bernsen in a major supporting role.

In 2005, Datzman began working with Michael Giacchino on Alias and later on Lost. She then worked as Giacchino's score assistant on Paramount Pictures' Mission: Impossible III, directed by J.J. Abrams and co-written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. She was again Giacchino's assistant on the hit Disney/Pixar film Ratatouille, helping to create the score which would earn Giacchino an Academy Award nomination. Datzman also assisted Giacchino in scoring the video game Medal of Honor: Airborne. More recently, she was Giacchino's score coordinator on the 2008 film Speed Racer.

In addition to Alias and Lost, Datzman did score preparation and assisted composer Jay Gruska on the television series Supernatural and Charmed. She was also an orchestrator on the 2005 TV movie Life Is Ruff, on which her fellow Michael Giacchino collaborator, Dan Wallin, was the score mixer. Currently, Datzman continues to work with Giacchino on Lost.
